What is SATOP?
The Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP) is a State of Texas funded program that bridges the gap between space industry discoveries and their practical application. SATOP’s mission is to help small businesses overcome technical challenges in the development of innovative products. SATOP provides FREE technical assistance to Texas-based small businesses and entrepreneurs.
About SATOP
SATOP is designed to bridge the gap between space industry discoveries and their practical application in the private sector. SATOP serves small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs from across various industries in Texas. By leveraging the extensive engineering expertise of NASA, aerospace companies, contractors, and academic partners, SATOP provides assistance to overcome product development challenges at no cost to the small business. This support improves the small business’ prospects for success in bringing their idea to the market, creating new jobs and stimulating the Texas economy.
Goals
1. Drive economic growth in Texas by enabling small businesses to overcome product development challenges.
2. Facilitate the exchange of engineering expertise to support and benefit small businesses.
3. Enhance higher education and workforce development by engaging students who learn how to solve real-world challenges.
4. Raise awareness of the space industry’s positive impact on technological advancements and innovation.
SATOP Programs
SATOP achieves its mission and goals through two primary programs. At the core of these programs is a strong network of Alliance Partners who donate their time and expertise to provide technical solutions to small businesses.
40-Hour Technical Assistance Program:
Individuals and small businesses with an identifiable challenge that could be solved by an engineering professional in 40 hours.
- Requestor has question/prototype
- Needs testing/validation, component level problem-solving, or design manufacturing
- Individual Alliance Partner volunteers
University Capstone Design Program:
Requestor has an idea or basic prototype but needs extensive design assistant. Service provided by Senior Engineering Students.
- Needs hands-on developmental work
- University teams volunteer 1-2 semesters
